Welcome to Learn to Skate!  Learn to Skate is a group skating curriculum designed to teach the fundamentals of ice skating in a positive and fun atmosphere to children, teens, and adults. LTS provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. Skaters progress at their own rate and advance to the next level after skill mastery is demonstrated.

Youth Learn to Skate Programs

ALL new participants will register for either Tot age 3-6 or Basic Skills 1 ages 6 to 17.  Skaters based on skill level can be moved after the first day of class.

Tots

Ages 3 – 6 years

Tot 1 introduces basic moves to young children ages 3-5 who are not yet ready for Basic 1. Tots classes are low-pressure, high-fun to keep little ones engaged and excited about skating! Tots will develop preliminary coordination and strength to move around on the ice.

Tot 2 builds off the skills learned in Tot 1, allowing children ages 3-5 to learn and develop at a pace that is just for them. Tot classes are low-
pressure, high-fun to keep little ones engaged and excited about skating! Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Tot 3 refines the skills in the first two levels and adds skills that challenge balance and fine motor skills. Games and play are designed to educate and entertain. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Tot 4 introduces skill needed to enter the “Basic” levels of the learn to skate program. Games and tasks are designed to teach balance and
command over gliding, stops and more. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Youth Basic Skills

Ages 6 -17 years

The Basic Skills curriculum is available to skaters over the age of 6 who are taking their first steps on the ice. Instructors use engaging activities to teach the FUNdamentals of ice skating. The six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns with agility, balance, coordination and speed as main focuses. Through these skills, skaters enter the first stage of skills to begin exploring the world of skating.

Upon completing the Basic Skills curriculum, skaters will be set up to choose whatever path in skating they desire. Whether they’re looking to land an Axel, score a hat trick or speed across the finish line, Basic Skills sets skaters up for success.

Basic 1 is designed for first time skaters ages 6-15, and provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speedskating. Basic 1 will introduce forward and backward skating, stops, and more, allowing each skater to develop confidence in a fun, low-pressure environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

challenging skills. Each skater will develop confidence in a fun, low-pressure environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance
after skill mastery is demonstrated. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Basic 3 Is designed to progress skaters into more challenging skills with a focus on speed, flow, and efficiency. Each skater will develop confidence in a fun environment that can set them up for success in hockey, figure skating Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Next Steps: Basic 3 OR LTHS Hockey 1 pending a “Pass” and coaches’ recommendation on your report card.

Basic 4 offers more challenging skills with a focus on speed, flow, and efficiency. This level introduces crossovers and alignment qualities needed to allow skaters to excel. Each skater will develop confidence in a fun environment that can set them up for success in hockey, figure skating. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. Class levels may be combined depending on capacity.

Next Steps: Basic 5 pending a “Pass” and coaches’ recommendation on your report card. Figure skaters interested in competition or more focused learning can join in any of our on and off-ice skills classes.

Basic 5 introduces back-crossovers and begins to combine previous skills to challenge the skater and engage more complex movement qualities. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated.

Adult Learn to Skate Programs

Adult Basic Skills

Ages 18+ years

The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. Participation in the program will help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Encompassing the first 3 levels in the LTSUSA Adult curriculum. This class will focus on the needs of the beginner skater to take you from first steps to gliding with confidence. Each class is tailored to meet the needs of each student to work at their pace.

Next steps: Adult: Beyond Basics (Levels 4-6) Pending coaches recommendation and students comfort level, and mid-day Coffee Club.

Encompassing levels 4-6 of the LTSUSA curriculum, this class builds on to the previous levels. It meets the needs of the skaters while adding challenges and boosts confidence. Adults skaters are given a chance to grow in a fun community of like minded individuals.
