Learn to Skate at Sno-King Ice Arena Snoqualmie

Welcome to Learn to Skate!  Learn to Skate is a group skating curriculum designed to teach the fundamentals of ice skating in a positive and fun atmosphere to children, teens, and adults. LTS provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. Skaters progress at their own rate and advance to the next level after skill mastery is demonstrated.

Winter 2023 Registration 

Priority registration will open November 28th for current registered skaters.

New Skaters can register on November 1st for Tot 1, Basic 1 or Adult 1 classes for the Winter Series.

Tot 1 introduces basic moves to young children ages 3-5 who are not yet ready for Basic 1. Tots classes are low-pressure, high-fun to keep little ones engaged and excited about skating! Tots will develop preliminary coordination and strength to move around on the ice.

Prerequisite:

Curriculum:

  • Sit and stand up with skates on – off-ice
  • Sit and stand up with skates on – on-ice
  • March in place
  • March forward (8-10 steps)
  • March forward, then glide on two feet (3 seconds)
  • Dip in place for 5 seconds without falling

Youth Basic Skills

Ages 6 -17 years

The Basic Skills curriculum is available to skaters over the age of 6 who are taking their first steps on the ice. Instructors use engaging activities to teach the FUNdamentals of ice skating. The six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns with agility, balance, coordination and speed as main focuses. Through these skills, skaters enter the first stage of skills to begin exploring the world of skating.

Upon completing the Basic Skills curriculum, skaters will be set up to choose whatever path in skating they desire. Whether they’re looking to land an Axel, score a hat trick or speed across the finish line, Basic Skills sets skaters up for success.

Includes: 2 family members additional members can be added for $120

Curriculum:

  • Sit and stand up – on-ice
  • March forward across the ice
  • Forward two-foot glide for a count of 4
  • Glide on two feet and Dip for a count of 4
  • Forward swizzles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Backward wiggles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Student will stop using a one or two foot snowplow stop

  • Forward two-foot glide for a count of 4
  • Glide on two feet and Dip for a count of 4
  • Forward swizzles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Backward wiggles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Student will stop using a one or two foot snowplow stop

Prerequisite:
Basic 1 or Snowplow Sam 4

Curriculum:

  • Scooter pushes (right and left)
  • Forward one-foot glides for a count of 4 (right and left)
  • Backward two-foot glide equal to skater’s height
  • Rocking Horse
  • Backward Swizzles without coming to a complete stop (6 in a row)
  • Two foot turns in place (both directions)
  • Moving forward snowplow stop (right and left)

Prerequisite:
Basic 2

Curriculum:

  • Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade
  • Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle with proper arm and head position – 6 in a row (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Moving forward to backward two-foot turns on a circle holding the exit of the turn for a count of 2 (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Beginning backward one-foot glides for a count of 2 (right & left)
  • Backward snowplow stop showing an obvious skidding motion (right and left)

Prerequisite:
Basic 3

Curriculum:

  • Forward outside edge on a circle for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Forward inside edge on a circle for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Forward crossovers without use of topic and showing two obvious pushes (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle – 6 to 8 pumps without coming to a stop (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Backward one-foot glides for a count of 4 (right and left)

Prerequisite:
Basic 4

Curriculum:

  • Backward outside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward inside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward crossovers – 4 to 6 crossovers with the foot sliding over and minimum toe pushing (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Forward outside three-turn holding both the forward outside and backward inside edge for 3 seconds (right and left)
  • Advanced two-foot spin (4-6)
  • Hockey stop – both direction

Prerequisite:
Basic 5

Curriculum:

  • Backward outside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward inside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward crossovers – 4 to 6 crossovers with the foot sliding over and minimum toe pushing (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Forward outside three-turn holding both the forward outside and backward inside edge for 3 seconds (right and left)
  • Advanced two-foot spin (4-6)
  • Hockey stop – both direction

Adult Learn to Skate Programs

Adult Basic Skills

The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. Participation in the program will help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Curriculum:

  • Falling and recovery; on ice
  • Forward marching
  • Forward two-foot glide
  • Forward swizzles (4-6 in a row)
  • One forward swizzle/one backward swizzle (rocking horse)
  • Dip
  • Forward snowplow stop – two feet or one foot

Prerequisite:
Adult 1

Curriculum:

  • Forward skating across the width of the ice
  • Forward one-foot glides, R and L
  • Forward slalom
  • Backward skating
  • Backward swizzles (4-6 in a row)
  • Two-foot turns in place

Prerequisite:
Adult 2

Curriculum:

  • Forward stroking using the blade properly (begin with repetitive one-foot pushes)
  • Forward half-swizzle pumps on the circle; 6 to 8 in a row, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Moving forward to backward and backward to forward two-foot turn on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Backward skating into a long two-foot glide
  • Forward chasses on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Backward snowplow stop, R and L

Adult 3

Curriculum:

  • Forward outside edge on a circle, R and L
  • Forward inside edge on a circle, R and L
  • Forward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise
